RecycleMania Time!

RecycleMania 2011 runs from February 7 to April 2. The University will be monitoring and reporting its waste and recycling totals so your participation will be visible.   Penn’s goal is to bump our 28% overall recycling rate up to at least 30%.

Here’s how you can participate!

RecycleMania is a great time to look at ways to reduce the waste you produce in your office! Here are some simple, easy steps you can take to reduce waste and support the University’s Climate Action Plan.

ü  Spring Clean Your Office for RecycleMania! You know there is LOTS of stuff in your offices, file cabinets and closets that can be recycled!  An office clean out can help your office realize the amount of waste generated in-house and what type of sustainable practices would work best for your space.  Do an office clean out during Recyclemania!  Make it count!  Use the Spring Cleaning Guide attached here for tips on how to do this!

ü  Use ceramic mugs for coffee and tea in the office!  Organize a “Bring a Mug from Home” event.  Nearly everyone has an extra mug around the house .

ü  Set your office printers to double-sided or “duplex printing.”  Reduces paper waste – and costs less too!

ü  Sign up to stop getting unwanted mail.  It’s easy!

More About RecycleMania
The Climate Action Plan calls on the University to reduce its overall waste stream and increase its diversion rate of paper, cardboard, and commingled (glass, plastic #1-7, and metal) recyclables to 40 percent by 2014. To make progress toward this goal and generate awareness about reducing waste and increasing recycling on campus, Penn will compete in the national RecycleMania competition for the fourth straight year.

RecycleMania is an eight-week competition between more than 600 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Campuses compete to see which can achieve the highest recycling rate and improve recycling performance in various categories.  The 2011 RecycleMania Tournament will run from February 6 to April 2.

Visit www.upenn.edu/sustainability to see results from last year’s competition and learn more about what you can do to help Penn increase its recycling rate and reduce its waste in the 2011 tournament!
